The weekend will kick off at 8:00 am with what for many is the highlight of the weekend, the Ranch Horse Competition!  This event has grown in stature over the years to where it attracts some of the top horses and cowboys/cowgirls from all over the western United States and Canada.  One hundred horses will compete this year for over $5,000 in prize money, a custom saddle and three silver trophy buckles, one for each division. Trophy saddle donated by York Dodge, Prescott, Arizona.
Open Division- Belt buckle donated by Kiyo Taylor, Horse Camp Design Studio, Sonoita, Arizona
Junior Division - Belt Buckle donated by Barry & Laurel Denton, Bar U Bar Ranch, Skull Valley, Arizona
Ladies Division- Belt Buckle donated by Gibbs Western Wear, Camp Verde, Arizona
Second place winners in all three divisions receive a custom breast collar donated by Skeeter & Patti Hughes, Stitching Post Leather, Dewey, Arizona
We would like to give a big thank you to all of our sponsors.

A new feature of the competition is the addition of two new divisions.  One for the ladies and a Junior horse division.  The Junior Horse division is open to all horses 3, 4, and five years old.  In these two divisions the rider has the option to either rope his/her steer or circle it up, as one would in a reined cow horse class.  “With the great number of young horses on today’s market we felt this would be a good way to help market some of them.  Not all of the young horses will be ready to take the jerk of a 600# yearling steer, but that doesn’t mean they aren’t well broke and ready to go on with” said Jon.  Marywade added, “For years we have had a number of ladies want to compete and show their horses, but they weren’t comfortable roping in a competitive situation.  Now we have a class for them!”

This year’s judges are Mike Kevil, Mike Drennan and Tom Stuart.  The top 25 horses and riders are brought back Saturday morning for a championship round at 8:00 am.  The combined scores from both days will determine the winners. Prize money will be divided among the top 5 overall.  One of the unique features of this event is that in order to win any prizes the horse MUST SELL IN THE SALE RING DURING THE SALE.   Following the Championship round of the Ranch Horse Competition there will be a preview of the roping and cutting horses.  At 11:00 am the sale will begin.  The competition and previews are a great way for buyers to study their potential purchases, meet the consignors and visit with them about their horses.

“We have a great group of consignors”, says Jon.  “Many of them return year after year to bring their horses to this sale.  I can’t stress enough the value of visiting with them prior to the sale, they’ll give the buyers valuable information to help them pick the right horse”.

The top auctioneer in the business, Steve Friskup of Muleshoe, Texas will preside over the sale, along with a group of professional ringmen.  The sale will start off with the horses that are entered in the Ranch Horse Competition.  Immediately following that the Traditional Open Session begins.  This session is open to horses of all breeds and all colors.  “There are lots of terrific horses out there that aren’t colored and we sure wanted them to have a place in our sale.   This year this session has a great selection of world class pedigrees, extremely well broke horses and of course some good gentle family style horses too.”

Sunday morning Cowboy Church is held in the sale ring at 8:00 am.  It will be followed by a preview of the Sunday sale horses, the Select Color Session.  This session will feature horses from all disciplines; cutters, reiners, ropers and family trail horses, and also breeding horses, broodmares and yearlings, but they all must be colored.  Paints, roans, palominos, buckskins, etc., anything except bays, browns, chestnuts and sorrels.

“Marywade and I always look forward to this sale”, says Jon.  “As I travel around the country, I hear more and more people talking about it and it’s becoming regarded as one of the best places in the nation to buy and sell good quality broke geldings as well as top pedigrees.  Everyone wants to buy a well broke, good-looking gelding.  This sale will have well over 150 of them to choose from.  There is not any other sale in this area that will offer such an exceptional selection of broke geldings!”

But the great horses aren’t all that makes this sale so special.  Rarely will a potential buyer find a sale where the horses are so well guaranteed.  All of the horses in the sale are guaranteed to be sound, not to be cinchy and not to crib.  “The soundness guarantee is good for three days and it means that the horse is guaranteed to see out of both eyes, not to be damaged in his wind and to hit the ground evenly at the trot, in a circle on hard ground” Jon said.  “The integrity of the sale is really its most important feature; without that the rest of it won’t matter.  All horse sales are not created equally and a buyer should read the terms and conditions of any sale they go to carefully and be certain of the guarantees and how, as a buyer, they will be protected.  Buyers and sellers must trust one another and it is my job to define and enforce the boundaries of that trust.  I’m proud to say that over all of the years we have put on our sales and the thousands of horses that have passed through our sale ring, I can count the number of times we’ve had problems on my fingers!  By guaranteeing that they are not buying someone else’s problem, we attract good quality consignors who come to us to help them promote their horse and help provide them with something they don’t have, national exposure and a pool of people ready to buy an exceptional horse.  We have been doing this sale for ten years and have been selling horses in Arizona for twenty years, we have flourished in a tough business because of our integrity and our commitment to selling sound, solid horses.”

Along with the horse activities there will also be a tradeshow with lots to offer everyone.  There will be trucks, trailers, tack, jewelry and other horse and western related items.

A printed copy of the catalog will be available at the sale and the internet catalog can be viewed at www.horsebreakers.com     The internet catalog features color pictures, pedigrees and footnotes on the horses in the sale, it will also provide a map to the fairgrounds and information on local motels.  For more information or any questions you might have you may call HorseBreakers Unlimited, LLC at 928-632-5728
